Case Study 131: Automated Testing Industry

Testing & Sampling • Hardness Testing Machine

New Technology Applied:

  • Allen Bradley ControlLogix
  • Allen Bradley PanelView Plus

Project Description:

Staneco Corporation designed a control system to measure the hardness of steel components for oil drilling. Unmachined steel parts were milled to provide a flat surface. The parts were clamped and a Brinell hardness sphere was pressed into the machined surface. A calibrated electronic camera was then positioned to measure the diameter of the dent to determine the hardness of the steel. The part was moved to another station where it was engraved with the hardness information. The good and bad parts were segregated.

Project Outcome:

High speed 100% testing was achieved when previously only spot checks were made on hardness.
